Search Engine Traffic And Ad Click Thru Rates

Chitika, the search-based online advertising network, has come up with some interesting statistics about search engine traffic and ad click thru rates. I borrowed their graph for an illustration.

Chitika Click Thru Rate-Graph

The odd part of this is that although AOL only accounts for about 1% of the entire search engine traffic, their users have the highest click thru rate, while Google has the lowest. Bing, Ask, and, Yahoo fall into the middle ground.

It is all speculation as to why this is. Some have offered that the Google users tend to be more Internet savvy and technical than users of the other search engines. This may be true, or it could be that the Google users are just online for more time on average than the others, and are so accustomed to the ads that they ignore them, and look through them, rather than clicking them.

In any case the information is good to know. Now how does one put it to work, capturing a larger share of traffic with the smaller search engines?

The first thing to do is make sure that your site or blog is listed in the other search engines and that your posts and articles are getting picked up by them. It does not hurt to submit to the search engines once a month or even once a week.

There are several free services that will do this for you or you can use a paid one. I prefer the free ones, since they are free. Just do an online search and you should find several that you can use.

You can go to Chitika and read their article, and the comments. It is very interesting.
