Simple FTP “File Transfer Protocol” Explained

Updated on 2010/060/28
FTP, “File Transfer Protocol”, is a software program that is used to transfer files from one computer system to another.
When you “FTP” transfer your WebPages and files from your hard drive to your site, you are actually transferring them to your Hosting Company’s computer (server).
Transferring files is not hard, and it is usually faster to use an FTP client than it is to use your Hosting Company’s file manager, or c-panel.
There are many different FTP programs, some are free and some are paid. Some of the best, free, and easiest to use are: KompoZer, AceFTP, and FTP Surfer 1.0.7.
You will have to download an FTP client before you can transfer files using FTP. Do an internet search and you will find more freeware to choose from. I do highly recommend KompoZer.
After you have downloaded your FTP software of choice, you need set up an account with a Hosting Company, if you have not already done so. Now you are ready to upload your pages to your site. Open your FTP client, and tell it what it wants to know.
It will usually ask you to give the site you are about to connect to a name. This name can be anything you want. This is for your identification and your own use. I use the actual site name so that I do not get confused.
It will then ask you for the host name/address. This will be the FTP address that your host emailed to you. If you don’t know it, you should contact your Hosting Company for the address.
Where it says Host Type, you will want to have “Automatic Detect”. Username or User I.D. is the user name that you have with your host. Password is also the password that you set up through your Hosting Company. Make sure that you uncheck “Anonymous”, and hit connect. All other boxes in the FTP client should be left either blank, or as they were when you first opened the client, unless otherwise specified by your hosting service.
Once you are connected, you need to find the files that you want to transfer. The files that are on your computers’ hard drive are in the left hand column, the files on the computer you are transferring to are in the right hand column.
Locate the file you want to transfer, highlight it with your mouse, and then select transfer or upload, depending on which client you are using. If you have a group of files all together that you want to upload, you can select them all, by highlighting one file, holding down the shift key, and selecting the last file in that group. This should cause all of those files to become highlighted. You can then upload all of them.
I know this is sounds simple, but it really is, once you experiment with it a few times. The crucial elements are your login and passwords. Once you get the FTP program installed on your computer and operational, you will discover how easy it is.

Thank you for the simple explaination of FTP. I have a blog site and have only used the Wordpress tools.
Simple File Transfer Protocol or FTP is not as scary as it seems. I remember the first time that I tried it and I was not successful. I quickly got over my mistakes and learned that I could undo everything that I tried so I spent a few hours and mastered it.
My biggest hurdle was getting the password and account correct. The Login was the hardest part of setting it all up.
Thanx for the info.
Simple FTP “File Transfer Protocol” is not that difficult to do it just takes some trial and error.
Practicing on a domain is easy and you can always undo what you have done, in this way you can practice until you understand everything that you need to know.
Good explanation thanks.
