Are You Prepared To Be “Wowd”?

Recently we have seen the addition of “Bing” to the arsenal of search engines. Now prepare to be “Wowd”. I do not know what the exact count is for internet search engines today. I do know that it numbers in the thousands, with only a very few being consistently used for web searches.

Bing is here to stay. It is already gaining a solid following. Many people want a change, especially from Google. AltaVista, Yahoo, AllTheWeb, and Lycos, are others that I am seeing when my websites are visited by searchers.

Now we have the newest addition, Wowd. It is claiming to be a user controlled search engine. With the motto “Discover what’s popular on the web”, Wowd aims to present dynamically updated user results, which can be user specific as well as inclusive.

Wowd is trying to capture users that are searching for what is popular, rather than what is ranked high by links, algorithms, keyword density, and unique content. The users create the data base and build the search index, when they use the software.

This is one way that the software works differently than other search engines. The users have to download the software to be able to influence the rankings and the search index. It can be accessed directly on the web, but when utilized in this manner it is not fully activated.

The more often users visit a page; the higher the page is ranked. I know that the elements of content, and keywords, will have some bearing, they have too, especially if two or more sites have equal popularity for the same niche. How else can they be separated on a scale if two sites have the same popularity and nearly identical content?

Wowd is counting on the users to form the data base and keep the information gathered and shared amongst the users. This is a novel idea for a search engine. We shall see what the user base size of Wowd reaches.

I have already downloaded the software and I am not impressed. It will take some time, and many more users to develop a data base large enough to satisfy the internet savvy. For now, Wowd has not WOW’d me, but I am prepared to be WOWD!
