Using Google’s Wonder Wheel Keyword Research Tool

Update: 09/25/2011

Since July of 2011 we  have waited for the return of Google’s Wonder Wheel. It seems that it is not going to reappear this time.

We are going to leave this post intact in case Google does bring it back, but until that happens you should change your tactics searching for keywords and search patterns for niche markets.

You can continue using Google’s free tools and use Google’s Related Searches, Google Insights, Google Trends,   Google’s External Keyword Tool, and Google’s Traffic Estimator, If you sign into your Google account first you will get the best results.

Google’s Related Searches is on the left side of their main page where the Wonder Wheel used to be. It will take some practice, but once you understand how it can benefit, you will like what it offers.

If Google ever brings the Wonder Wheel back we will let everyone know.

Update:09/14/2010

(To use Google’s Wonder Wheel you will have to disable Google Instant. To do this you will have to click on the Search Settings in the upper right hand corner of your web page and check the box that disables Google Instant. Then click on “save preferences”.)

Google’s Free Wonder Wheel is an often overlooked free Keyword Research Tool. It can be used along with other free and paid Keyword Research Tools for keyword phrase research.

To use the Wonder Wheel pick a niche market keyword or keyword phrase.

Open Google Search and in Google’s Search Box type in any topic or search phrase.

After the results appear look on the left side of the Webpage look under ‘All Results’ and click on ‘Wonder Wheel’.

In our example we typed in “article submission software”.

Google’s Wonder Wheel will show you several alternative keywords and keyword phrases in a “wheel spoke” format.

Drilling Down For Keyword Niches

You can use the first results or continue to drill down further and find more specialized search terms, focused keywords and keyword phrases related to your original search results.

Google’s Wonder Wheel now shows sub-categories for the keyword. Click on one of the links.

When you click on one of the sub-categories another Wonder Wheel will appear with more keyword options and keyword phrases.

In our example we clicked on “free article submission software”.

Google’s Wonder Wheel reveals optional keywords for your chosen keyword, keyword phrase or niche for you to add or write articles on your website, blog, or for article submission sites.

The Google Wonder Wheel is an easy way to research a niche or product to find keywords that are current and relevant for AdSense and AdWords ads, Marketing Campaigns, PPC (Pay Per Click), article subject matter, and any kind of advertising that you may desire to achieve current marketing results and search terms for.

Plug the terms that grab your interest into your favorite keyword research tool or a paid one like (Micro Niche Finder or Keyword Elite) and select the keywords with the best potential.

Google Related Search

Another tool that can be extremely helpful when conducting quick keyword research is the Google Related Search option. This tool works somewhat like Google’s Wonder Wheel but only serves up keywords. It usually contains more results and the results are slightly more detailed.

This is found on the left side of the Webpage just above the Wonder Wheel.

Keyword Research — Drilling Down for Niche Keywords

You can use Google’s External Keyword Tool to further drill down for niche keywords.

Go to Google’s External keyword Tool and select which search you want to do. We chose “free article submission software”.

If you select the word or phrase box you will need to enter the phrase or article idea in the box in the center of the page.

If you select the Website box you will need to enter the URL page address for the website or article you would like keywords generated for.

Now press the search button.

The table will show 100 results for Keyword Competition, Global Monthly Searches, Local Monthly Searches, and Local Search Trends.

If you want to save the results you can download the results into a notepad or word doc directly from the Webpage by clicking on the Advanced Options button.

If you want more results you will need to create an AdWords account.

With an AdWords account you can find out what advertisers are paying for the keywords that you want to target. The higher the cost and the more competition can give you keywords to target for articles and Website content that can help to gain AdSense revenue, if that is your objective.

We hope that this helps to explain what is possible with Google’s Wonder Wheel and Google’s External Keyword Tool.

You should also combine these two tools with our free Keyword Tools List, or with paid tools like (Micro Niche Finder and Keyword Elite).

Play around with these free tools from Google and allow them to help in your searches for new and current keywords and keyword phrases being used by searchers.
