What Are The Top And Most Popular Hot Searches?

Updated on January 21, 2010
After understanding the importance of keyword tools and their relationship to traffic and popular searches, you must develop a strategy of zeroing in on a niche, or a corner of the market that is being searched consistently online.
This brings us to popular searches, popular hot searches, and hot search tags. Keeping up with what are the top searches, and most often searched online, opens potential new markets, and can help to narrow or broaden our keyword list building, depending upon your goal.
There are many places to find what people are looking for on the internet. Google Trends may be the most frequented and have the most current information. There are others that should be checked and used for comparison, and cross referencing.
There are some marketers that follow popular searches religiously and throw up Squidoo Lenses, HubPages, or just add a sub folder to an existing domain based upon their findings to take advantage of the temporary search interests, to sell affiliate products. This is can be a full time and exceedingly difficult way to make money online.
Do not think that this is the only use for popular searches and keywords tools. There are too many to list in one post and we will be attempting to expand upon them in the future.

The key element is that anyone can take the popular searches and track them for a few days, weeks, or months and build niche sites, either Blogs or Websites and capitalize upon what is being searched for on the internet.
These can be focused sites that are centered on a group of keywords that have good traffic, but are not so competitive that many others are also trying to get ranked for them.
A good rule of thumb is to keep your keyword picks to between 300 to10,000 searches, although some choose to go as high as 30,000 searches.
This will keep the most competitive keywords off of your list for the time being. You can add them into your posts and articles later on as you begin to get traffic. To begin with focus on the less competitive keywords and searches.
Here is a preliminary list of sites that we use for checking the top searches and search tags of what hot and popular searches are being searched for online. Some of them also include keywords and their frequency of use. They are not listed by importance or value
#1. Google Trends
This is a good tool for finding out what the top twenty searches are on a particular date. You can dig into these searches or conduct your own. It also lists the top twenty hot topics.
This tool allows you to zero in on your keyword research in many different ways. You can break it down by location, time or category. You can see what is currently popular and compare it with older popular search results, and you can even look at seasonal searches.
#3. Yahoo Buzz
This tool reveals what the Yahoo users are searching for. It shows the top twenty results, and offers a quick view of a few different hot categories.
#4. eBayPulse
This shows what people are searching for on eBay, the popular auction site. What distinguishes this site is that most of the searches are being done by buyers and not information seekers or people searching out of curiosity.

This shows the top ten hot searches by AOL users.
#6. Torrent Zap
This shows some of the top searches for torrents which can be applied with some of the other results. It is mostly movies, television and music.

Lycos used to have a top fifty http://50.lycos.com/, but seems to have quit this service. They are still a useful site to check and see what the top searches are in various categories.
Amazon has a many categories that can be checked for the most popular searches. The categories are listed in the left column.
Amazon Bestsellers is a great place to check for searches. This tells you valuable information about what people are buying.

The tags show by size what is being searched most frequently.
This tag cloud shows what is popular by search and interest. The larger the size of the tag the more frequently it is being searched.
#12. Flickr Hot Tags
This tag cloud is similar to the others but is easier to read and see the all time hottest topics involving photo searches.
#13. Ask.com
The search engine Ask.com, divides the top searches into four categories, Top Searches, Top Advancing Searches, Top News Searches, and Top Movies.
#14. Kartoo
This tool can be used to see what sites are already using your keywords and how often they appear on the sites.
#15. Technorati
This is a good tool that has been offline for awhile but they claim that they will be back online soon.
#16. Google Zeitgest
One of the most important is Google Zeitgest. This one is left out of every online list and it is so important. Other marketers either do not want you to have access to it, or just do not know about it.
#17. Backtype
This is a relatively new addition and will be watched. For now it seems to be a viable tool to find current information of what is being posted across the NET. All you have to do is type in the search terms and let it browse. The possibilities are endless. You can find blogs and forums related to your search and Niche to post on and create backlinks.
#18. Alexa Hot Urls
This is one that most do either do not know about or do not list. It shows the hot sites as well as the hot topics and articles of the day. It is another excellent source that is overlooked by many search listings.
If anyone has any suggestions of any other tools that we may have overlooked please add a comment or any information that may help others.
Remember these 3 rules for online success:
1. Know or understand how to get your own blog, or website setup
2. Know how to implement compelling copy onto your site
3. And know how to get targeted traffic to your site
